What is the best option: EV, hybrid or PHEV?
There is no single best option. An EV can suit drivers who can charge regularly and mainly complete predictable trips. A hybrid can be easier if charging is inconvenient, while a PHEV combines electric driving with petrol backup for longer journeys.
Do used EV batteries need replacing?
Not necessarily. EV batteries gradually lose some capacity over time, but battery condition varies by vehicle, age and usage. It is more useful to assess the battery's current condition and usable range than to assume it will need replacing because of age alone. Modern batteries can outlast the life of the vehicle itself.
How far can a used EV travel on one charge?
Range varies significantly between models and can also be affected by battery condition, weather, speed and driving style. PHEVs will generally have a range of under 40-100km, while full EVs can achieve 300–500 km on a full charge for newer models. Older/cheaper used EVs can be closer to 120–300 km.
Do I need a special charger at home?
At a minimum you should have what's called a Portable EV Charger. These will plug into a standard household plug and charge at around 10km of range per hour. These will charge most PHEVs overnight, ready for the next day. If you have a full EV you might want to consider a wall charger that's wired into your home and can charge at around 40 km of range per hour.
Are used PHEVs good for longer trips?
Yes. A PHEV can operate using its petrol engine once the available battery charge has been used, making it more flexible for longer trips than a full EV.
